Location: South Africa » Northern Cape » Karoo » Jan Kempdorp

This idyllic town is situated on the Cecil John Rhodes Route into Africa. Originally known as Andalusia, the town is home to the headquarters of the Department of Water Affairs, responsible for managing the Vaalharts irrigation scheme and was named for the Minister of Agriculture, Jan Kemp, in 1954.

HISTORICAL VIEW

The old border between the Cape and Transvaal Provinces used to run through the town, dividing it in half. This made it impossible to establish any local authority. The situation was rectified by Parliament passing the Jan Kempdorp Act in 1964 providing for the administration of the town as part of the Cape Province
